“When I was asked to compose this chapter for the book project, I debated about the ways that I could express what I wanted to say, and the advice I really want the next generation of Asian Americans needed to hear. I thought that maybe through a story I could provide the best-illustrated portrait of life in the past 30 years, but I decided to write what was coming from my heart, and what my mind told my fingers to type. I wanted the younger generation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander to know that they are loved. Even if it’s not said, it is demonstrated.”
